A Rebirth Of Hope And Activism
The atmosphere that day in Washington caused a mixture of hope and excitement. I think that everyone who attended the march felt empowered due to the atmosphere of the event. There was a tremendous sense that we were pursuing a cause that was honorable, and a certainty that what we wanted was achievable. We were there as Americans — and all of America was represented that day. It felt like we were witnessing a new moment, a rebirth of hope and activism. It was truly inspiring to be in the crowd. The voices, the unity, and the strength created a sense of invincibility.
We had high expectations that day and they were fulfilled due to the amazing speeches. There were several rousing speeches before Dr. King took the platform, as well as music and singing. All of the commotion built the crowd up for the final speech of the day as excitement grew with every speech.
Of course, the "I Have a Dream" speech was the event of the day. It has since been recognized as one of the great speeches of American history due to how memorable the words were. I was not surprised by the content, because we had worked with him on it. What we were not prepared for was how powerful and poetic his words were going to be and the impact that it would have on the crowd.
