The major theme of the poem is the impact of the two dissimilar cultures on the lifetime of the poet speaker, Mr. Parthasarathy. The poem is highlighted in the clash between two dissimilar cultures – English and Tamil. The poem is written in three parts:

• “Exile” against the culture of India to the Europe and inspects the consequences of British rule on an Indian, and particularly an Indian’s loss his identity and therefore his need to go back to his roots.
