Distance = 5 m + 12 m = 17 km

Displacement: Shortest distance between initial and final points.
When we draw a rough picture of question we will get right angled triangle with Hypotenuse as Shortest distance between initial and final points.

So, by Pythagoras theorem displacement is
Displacement = sqrt[(5 m)² + (12 m)²] = 13 m
