The Mansabdari System
____________________
As said earlier, Akbar reorganised the whole machinery of civil and military
services on the new lines, known as the Mansabdari system.
The Mansabdars drew pay according to their ranks and had to furnish the
number of men indicated in their grades, when called upon to do so. The
highest grades were reserved for the members of the royal family. The
Mansabdari troops were recruited by the Mansabdar himself and could be
transferred by the emperor at his sweet will. The king, however, laid down
general rules for the recruitment, maintenance and payment of troops. To
keep a check on malpractices by Mansabdars, descriptive rolls of their
soldiers were maintained.
