Given:

The map of a walking trail starts at R(-1,4) and goes to S(5,4) and continues to T(5,-2).

To Find:

The total length of walking trail is

Solution:

Distance Formula = D = \sqrt{(x_{2} - x_{1}  )^{2}  + (y_{2} - y_{1}  )^{2}   } \\

We need to find the total distance of the trail.

total trail =  RS + ST

R(-1,4)   S (5,4)   T(5,-2)

RS= \sqrt{(5 - (-1)  )^{2}  + (4 - 4  )^{2}   } \\\\RS= 6 units\\

ST= \sqrt{(5 - 5  )^{2}  + (-2 - 4  )^{2}   } \\\\\\ST= 6 units\\

Total distance of trail = RS + ST = 6 + 6 = 12 units.

The total length of walking trail is 12 units.
