Taj mahal is an example of iron corrosion of marble. The discorrosion of its marble is due to corrosion.
The gaseous oxide ( CO2, NO2 and SO2) present in air as chemical pollutants mix with water in air to from acids such as carbonic acid, nitric acid and sulphuric acid. This acid comes down as acid and causes corrosion of marble statues. calcium carbonate present in marble it transformed into other compounds by reaction acid as follow:-
CO2 + H2o + CaCO3 → Ca ( HCO3 ).
CaCO3 + H2SO4 → CaSO4 + CO + H2O.
The compound formed are water soluable and are easily washed away.
Blackening of marble surface is due to the presence of carbonate, nitric and sulphuric acid
