Given:

The marked price of a shirt is 1000.

A shopkeeper offers a 10% discount and again offers a 20% discount on the new price.

To find:

How much you will have to pay finally?

Solution:

We know that if 2 successive discounts on an article are a% and b% respectively, then the single equivalent discount on it is given as:

\boxed{\bold{a + b - \frac{a \times b}{100}  }}

The shopkeeper offers a discount of 10% and then again a discount of 20% on the purchase of the shirt

∴ The total discount offered by the shopkeeper is,

= 10 + 20 - \frac{10 \times 20}{100}

= 10 + 20 - 2

= 30 - 2

= 28\%

The marked price of the shirt = Rs. 1000

Therefore,

The sales price of the shirt will be,

= Marked Price - (\frac{Discount}{100} \times Mraked \:Price)

= 1000 - (\frac{28}{100} \times 1000)

= 1000 - 280

= \bold{720}

Thus, I will finally have to pay Rs. 720 for the shirt.
