given,

marked price = rs. 42000

successive discounts = 40% and 2%.

find the selling price.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

when two discounts are given as successive discounts it means the first discount is calculated on the marked price, and then on that amount the second discount is calculated.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

FIRST METHOD:

sp =  \frac{100-D1}{100} × \frac{100-D2}{100} × CP/MP (D1 is discount% one and D2 is discount% 2)

Sp = \frac{100-40}{100} × \frac{100-2}{100} × 42000

sp = \frac{60}{100} × \frac{98}{100} × 42000

sp = 6×98×42 (by cancelling all the zeros)

sp = 24696

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SECOND METHOD:

first by calculating 40% on rs.42000

\frac{40}{100} × 42000  (100 and 42000 will cancel out and 420 will be in the numerator)

so discount will be rs. 40×420 = rs.16800

so discount of 2% will be calculated on 42000-16800

so 2% discount will be calculated on rs.25200

\frac{2}{100} × 25200 (100 and 25200 will get cancelled and 252 will be in the numerator)

discount = 2 × 252 = rs.504

so the selling price = 25200 - 504

sp = rs.24696.

both methods can be used but method 1 is much faster.

whichever method is easier for you, you can follow it,

sp = selling price

D1 and D2 = discounts respectively

mp = marked price.

rs. = rupees

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

hope it helps!

have a great day!
