Given:

The marks of 13 students (out of 50) in an examination are:

39, 21, 23, 17, 32, 41, 18, 26, 30, 24, 27, 36, 9.

To find:

The median marks.

Solution:

As we know that if there is an odd number (n) of observations in a data, then its median is obtained by:

 = (\frac{n + 1}{2} )th \: observation

Also,

if there is an even number (n) of observations in a data, then median is obtained by:

\frac{ (\frac{n}{2})th \: observation \: + (\frac{n}{2} + 1)th \: observation }{2}

Now,

as given, we have,

A data

39, 21, 23, 17, 32, 41, 18, 26, 30, 24, 27, 36, 9.

First of all, we arrange the data in ascending order, we get,

9, 17, 18, 21, 23, 24, 26, 27, 30, 32, 36, 39, 41

As we can see, there are 13 observations in the given data set.

So,

n = 13

So,

the median is

 = (\frac{n + 1}{2} )th \: observation =  (\frac{13 + 1}{2} )th \: observation =  \frac{14}{2}  = 7th \: observation

7 th observation is 26.

Hence, the median of marks is 26.
