The minimum value of X is 6  if Mode for the given data is 4

Given:

The marks scored by some students in a math test

Marks   Number of students

0                        3

1                         2

2                        3

3                        5

4                        X

5                        1

Mode for the given data is 4

To Find:

  • The minimum value of X

Solution:

  • Mode of data set is the value which occurs maximum number of times.
  • A Data set can have multiple modes or no mode at all

Marks   Number of students

0                        3

1                         2

2                        3

3                        5

4                        X

5                        1

Given that 4 is the mode of the data Hence, 4 must have maximum occurrence.

So number of Students having marks 4 must be maximum.

5 Students got  3  Marks Hence number of students getting mark 4  should be more than 5.

(In case of 5 students getting marks 4 , there will be two mode 3 and 4)

As Given data has only mode 4

So Number of students must be more than 5 who got 4 marks

Minimum Students more than 5 can be 6 as Students can not be whole numbers only.

Hence Minimum value of X is 6
