Although they are critical at all levels, at the high school level many students will not get the assistance they need for life beyond HS without the help of a counselor. Principals are overwhelmed and many teachers do not have the knowledge that is required to assist a HS student with post HS plans. In middle school, the biggest contribution of an effective school counselor is assisting parents, administration, and students with the challenges of adolescence. At the younger grades, counselors can eliminate and/or greatly diminish the need for discipline referrals by assisting teachers and students with the tools they need to solve problems independently.
