The mass and weight of an object on earth are 5 kg and 49 N respectively. What will be their values on the moon? Assume that the acceleration due to gravity on the moon is 1/6th of that on the earth. Solve it.

Mass of the Object is the quantity of the matter contained in it. It always remains unchanged. It even does not depends upon the acceleration due to the gravity. On the other planets only weight of the object changes since there is the change in acceleration due to the gravity.

Hence, the mass of the of the object on the moon will be same as that on the Earth, i.e. 5 kg.

Now, Let us calculate the weight of the object on the Moon.
Weight is the force exerted on the object due to the force of the gravity.

Weight of the Object on the Earth = 49 N.
Gravity of the moon is 1/6th of the Earth, therefore, the weight of the object on the moon is also 1/6th of the weight of the Earth.

∴ Weight of the object on moon = 1/6 × 49
   = 8.167 N.

Hence, the weight of the object on the moon is 8.167 N.

Hope it helps. :-)
