Given :

  • Mass of object (m) = 5 kg
  • Weight of object (w) = 49 N

To Find :

  • Mass and weight of Object on the surface of the moon.

Solution :

We're given that mass and weight of an Object on earth are 5kg and 49 N respectively. We've to find out the value of masses and weight of the same object on the surface of the moon, where gravitational force is 1/6 times that of on earth.

⇒Mass = 5 kg

Mass of the object will remain same i.e., 5kg on the surface of earth as well on the surface of the moon. As, the mass of the object never changes. It is a scalar quantity. It have only magnitude no direction.

And, For weight of the object on moon. We've to find out the value of acceleration due to gravity on the surface of the moon. which is 1/6 times that of on the earth. Let the acceleration due to gravity on surface of moon be g'.

And we also know that the value of acceleration due to gravity on earth is 9.8 m/s²

⇒g' = g * (1/6)

⇒g = 9.8/6

⇒g = 1.634

\therefore Acceleration due to gravity on the surface of moon will be 1.634 m/s²

⇒Weight = Mass * Acceleration due to gravity

⇒Weight = 5 * 1.634

⇒Weight = 8.167

\therefore Weight of the object on the surface of moon is 8.167 N
