Mass number is defined as the total number of protons and neutrons present in the nucleus of an atom that is it is a term which signifies the number. Atomic mass on the other hand is a term which gives the total mass of protons and neutrons in an atom. Also, the atomic mass is measured with respect to mass of 1/12 the mass of one carbon atom, where as no such measurement is done in case of mass number.

Another major difference between mass number and atomic mass is that while the mass number is always an integral quantity, atomic mass is not an integral quantity. For example, the mass number of hydrogen is 1, but its atomic weight is 1.008 u.

Answer:

The mass number is not equal to the atomic mass because of isotopes.

Mass number is simply the number of protons and neutrons.

The actual atomic mass of an atom is the weighted average of all existing atoms & isotopes per element. The isotopes have a different number of neutrons than protons.
