CORRECT QUESTION:

The mass of a block made of a certain material is 13.5 kg and its volume is 15 × 10^-3 m³ Calculate thrust on the block if it is held fully immersed in water Will the blocked float or sink in water when released What will be the thrust on the block while floating? (Density of water= 1000 kg/ m³)

GIVEN:

  • mass of the block =13.5 kg
  • volume of the block = 15 × 10-³ m³
  • density of water = 1000 kg / m³

SOLUTION:

(1) We know that ,

Upthrust = Vol of block × density of water× g

Upthrust = 15 × 10^-3 m³ × 1000 kg/m³ ×10

Upthrust = 150 N

1 st method

Density of water = 1000 kg/m³

Density of block

= mass / vol

= 13.5 kg/ 15×10^-3 m³

= 0.9×10³ kg / m³

=900 kg / m³

As density of block is less than density of water it will float

2 nd method

Upthrust = 150 N

weight of the block = mg =13.5×10=135 N

As the upthrust is greater than weight of the block it will float

(2)

If the block is floating then upthrust acting on the block will be equal to it's weight

U = W

U = mg

U = 135 N
