Question :

The Mass of a Box is 60 kg. The Base Area of the Box is 200 cm².

Find the Pressure exerted by the Box on the Ground.

(Take g = 9.8 ms⁻²)

\begin{gathered} \end{gathered}

Solution :

Given,

Mass of the Box, m = 60 kg

Base Area of the Box, A = 200 cm²

\begin{gathered} \end{gathered}

\begin{aligned} \mathtt{Thrust \leftrightarrow Force, F} &= \mathtt{Mass \times g}\\\\&= 60\ kg \times 9.8\ ms^{-2}\\\\&= \bf 588\ N \end{aligned}

Base Area of the Box = 200 cm² = \dfrac{200}{10000}\ m^2 = \bf 0.02\ m^2

\begin{gathered} \end{gathered}

By using the Formula

\boxed{\mathtt{Pressure = \dfrac{Thrust}{Area}}} ,

\mathtt{Pressure} = \dfrac{588\ N}{0.02\ m^2} = \bf 29,400\ Nm^{-2}

\begin{gathered} \end{gathered}

Hence, Pressure exerted by the Box on the Ground = 29,400 Nm⁻²

\begin{gathered} \end{gathered}

More Information :

Thrust: Force exerted by an Object perpendicular to the Surface is called Thrust.

\begin{gathered} \end{gathered}

Pressure: Pressure is defined as Thrust (or Force per unit Area) on a Surface.

The SI Unit of Pressure is \bf \dfrac{N}{m^2}\: or\: Nm^{-2}

In honor of Scientist Blaise Pascal, the SI Unit of Pressure is called Pascal, Denoted by Pa.
