The mass % of nitrogen in one of its oxides is 46.67, determine the empirical formula of the compound. ​

Explanation:

Let us assume the weight of the compound =100 gm.

Weight of nitrogen =36.8 gm

Moles of nitrogen =1436.8

∴ Weight of oxygen =100−36.8=63.2 gm

Moles of oxygen =1663.2

The ratio of number of moles of N and O is,

N:O=1436.8 : 1663.2

 

           =2.628:3.95

            =1:1.5

             =2:3

So, formula is N2O3.
