Given :

  • Mass of Earth, M = 6 × 10²⁴ kg
  • Mass of Moon, m = 7.4 × 10²² kg
  • Distance between Earth and Moon, d = 3.84 × 10⁵ km = 3.84 × 10⁸ m

To find :

  • Force exerted by Earth on the Moon, F = ?

Formula required :

  • Formula to calculate Gravitation force (F) between two bodies of masses M and m , where d is the distance between the bodies

F = G M m / d²

[ where G is universal gravitation constant ]

Solution :

Using the formula to calculate Gravitational force

and taking G = 6.67 x 10⁻¹¹  m³ kg⁻¹ s⁻²

→ F = G M m / d²

→ F = (6.67 × 10⁻¹¹) (6 × 10²⁴) (7.4 × 10²²) / (3.84 × 10⁸)²

→ F = (296.148 × 10³⁵) / (14.7456 × 10¹⁶)

→ F = 20.08 × 10¹⁹ N

therefore,

  • Force exerted by Earth on the Moon is 20.08 × 10¹⁹ Newtons. (approx.)
