Mastication is defined as the process by which food is mechanically broken down (crushed and ground) in the mouth by the action of the teeth. This results into smaller particles of the ingested food.
The importance this has in digestion, is that the surface area brought into contact with the digestive enzymes is highly increased making digestion easier.
