Actually an atom would try make 2n^2 electrons revolve in any shell or 2 or 8 or 18 and so on.If the atom should have more than 8 electrons in the valence shell but it is revolving 8 or 2 electrons than the octet is regarded as fulfilled. Therefore it does not contradicts the 2n^2 formula.
