Given:

The mean age of 18 students in a class is 14.5 years

Two more students of age 15 and 16 years join the class

To find:

The new mean age

Solution:

To solve the given problem we will use the following formula:

\boxed{\bold{Average = \frac{Sum\:of\:observations}{No.\:of \:observations} }}

We have,

The sum of ages of 18 students in a class = 18 × 14.5 = 261 years

Since it is given that 2 more students joined the class

∴ No. of students now become = 18 + 2 = 20

and

∴ The new sum of ages of 20 students = 261 + 15 + 16 = 292 years

Now, using the formula of average we will find the new mean age:

New Mean Age = \frac{292}{20} =  \bold{14.6\:years}

Thus, the new mean age is 14.6 years.
