Mean is the average of a given set of data.

Given: Mean of 100 observations is 40 and one observation of 84 was misread as 48.

To find: The correct mean.

Answer:

Mean = Sum of all observations/Total number of observations.

Therefore sum = Mean*Total number of observations.

Total number of observations = 100

Mean = 40

Substituting the values,

Sum = 40*100 = 4000

New sum = sum - wrong data + right data

Wrong Data: 48

Right Data: 84

New sum = 4000 - 48 + 84

New sum = 4036

Therefore new mean = 4036/100 = 40.36

Hope it helps :)
