The value of x would be 17.5

Given

  • 18, 24,15,2x + 1,12
  • mean 21

To find

  • the value of x

Solution

we are provided with the mean of five numbers and a variable in contained in this and are asked to find the value of the variable x.

we know that mean is given by sum of the observation divided by the number of observation,

therefore,

21 = (18+ 24 + 15 + 2x +1 + 12)/5

or, 21 = (70 + 2x)/5

or, 105 = 70 + 2x

or, 35 = 2x

or, x = 17.5

Therefore, the value of x would be 17.5

For the given numbers 18,24,15,2x+1,12 the value of x is 17.5

Mean

Mean is the average of the given numbers and is calculated by dividing the sum of given numbers by the total number of numbers.

Types of mean

(1) Arithmetic mean

Arithmetic mean= sum of observations / total nos of observation

(2) Geometric mean

$$\left(\prod_{i=1}^{n} x_{i}\right)^{\frac{1}{n}}=\sqrt[n]{x_{1} x_{2} \cdots x_{n}}$$$\Pi=$ geometric mean$n=$ number of values$x_{i}=$ values to averag

(3) Harmonic mean

Harmonic Mean, HM = n / [(1/x1)+(1/x2)+(1/x3)+…+(1/xn)]

Calculation

Arithmetic mean: (18+24+15+2X+1+12)/5=21

(69+2X+1)/5=21

X=17.5

Hence the value of x is 17.5
