The mean of 2, 12, 4, 9, 5 and 16 is x. The median of 4, 3, x, x - 1, 12, and 16 is y.
Find the values of x and

x = 8  and y = 6

mean = (2+ 12 + 4 + 9 + 5 + 16) / 6

= 48/6

= 8 therefore x=8

So the median of  -1, 3, 4, x-1, x, 12, 16        ( arrange in ascending order)

So, x=8 and x-1 = 7

the median of -1, 3, 4, 8, 12, 16 = {(n/2)th observation + (n/2 +1)th observation} / 2

As the number of observations are even, we use the above formula

so the median = (3rd obs. + 4th obs.) / 2

=  ( 4+ 8) / 2

= 12 / 2

= 6 =y

therefore x = 8  and y = 6
