The mean of 40 numbers was found to be 38. Later on, it was detected that a number 56 was misread as 36. Find the correct mean of the given numbers.

Reverse the sum to find the total

40 x 38 = 1520

Now if 53 should have been 35 then

53-35= 18 this is the difference

1520 - 18 = 1502

The mean of 1502 for 40 numbers is 37.55

Once the principles above are understood you can simplify as follows

∴  Mean=(38)
