Given :-

The Mean of 5,10,x+1,2x-3,x+6 is 20.

To find :-

The value of x.

Solution :-

Given observations are : 5,10,x+1,2x-3,x+6

Sum of all observations

= 5+10+x+1+2x-3+x+6

= (x+2x+x)+(5+10+1-3+6)

= 4x+(22-3)

= 4x+19

Number of all observations = 5

We know that

Mean = Sum of observations/Number of observations

=> Mean of the data = (4x+19)/5

According to the given problem

Mean of the data = 20

Therefore, (4x+19)/5 = 20

=> 4x+19 = 20×5

=> 4x+19 = 100

=> 4x = 100-19

=> 4x = 81

=> x = 81/4

=> x = 20.25

Answer :-

The value of x= 20.25

Check :-

If x = 20.25 then x+1 = 20.25+1 = 21.25

2x-3 = 2(20.25)-3 = 40.50-3 = 37.50

x+6 = 20.25+6 = 26.25

The observations will be 5,10,21.25,37.50,26.25

Mean = (5+10+21.25+37.50+26.25)/5

=> Mean = 100/5

=> Mean = 20

Verified the given relations in the given problem.

Used formulae:-

Mean = Sum of observations/Number of observations
