The mean of 5 number is 18 . If one number is excluded, their mean is 16,find the excluded number..

Let the five numbers be x1, x2, x3, x4, x5

Mean of 5 numbers = 18

Mean
$= \frac{sum \: \: of \: \: all \: \: observations}{total \: \: number \: \: of \: \: obsevations}$

$\frac{x1 + x2 + x3 + x4 + x5}{5} = 18$


$x1 + x2 + x3 + x4 + x5 = 18 \times 5$


$x1 + x2 + x3 + x4 + x5 = 90 \: \: \: \: \: .......(1)$


If one number is excluded, I. E. x5

Then mean is 16

$\frac{x1 + x2 + x3 + x4 }{4} = 16$

$x1 + x2 + x3 + x4 = 16 \times 4$


$x1 + x2 + x3 + x4 = 64$


Putting the value in x1 + x2 + x3 + x4 in eqⁿ (1)


$x1 + x2 + x3 + x4 + x5 = 90$

$64 - x5 = 90$

$x5 = 90 - 64$

$x5 = 26$


Excluded number = 26
