Mean =X = 18
No of observations = 5
Sum of observations= Sigma x = 18 x 5 = 90
Let the excluded number be x
New Mean X' = 16
New number of observations = 4
New sum of observations = 16 x 4
= 64 which is equal to 90 - x
Thus x= 90 - 64 = 26
Hope this helps you!

Mean of 5 numbers = 18
Average or Mean = sum total/Number of observations
18 = sum total/5
Sum total = 18*5 = 90
When one number is removed, mean becomes 16
Sum total of 4 numbers = 16*4 = 64
Hence number removed = 90-64 = 26
Hope it helps.
