Answer:

step by step explanation:

Given:The mean of 5 numbers is 40

Mean of first two numbers is 45

Mean of last two numbers is 42

let 5 numbers are

a,b,c,d,e

a+b+c+d+e/5=40

a+b+c+d+e=200.............(1)

a+b/2=45

a+b=90...............(2)

d+e/2=42

d+e=84...............(3)

substitute equation 2 and 3 in 1

90+c+84=200

c=200-174

c=26

so third number is 26
