One simple trick is to see if the same number is added,subtracted,multiplied or divided from all the numbers then do the same thing with their mean.

Example : in your question 5 is being added to all the numbers so we have to add 5 to the original mean to get the new mean

New Mean = 40 + 5 = 45 is the answer

2nd Method :

let the 8 numbers be x1 , x2 ...........................,x8

Now (x1 + x2 + .........+ x3)/8 = 40                  (given)

Sum of 8 terms will be 40 * 8 = 320

Now 5 is added to all 8 numbers which mean that their sum will increase by 8 * 5 = 40

New Sum = 320 + 40 = 360

New Median = 360/8 = 45

Try using first trick in your class to surprise your teacher or even you classmates and use 2nd trick in exams to get full marks
