The mean of a, b, c, d and e is 28. If the mean of a, c and e is 24, find the mean of b and d.

Mean = \frac{Sum \: of \: all \: observations}{Total \: number \: of \: observations}

According to the question,

28 = \frac{a + b + c + d + e }{5}

a + b + c + d + e = (28) (5)

a + b+ c + d + e = 140 -----(1)

24 = \frac{a + c + e}{3}

a + c + e = (24) (3)

a + c + e = 72 -----(2)

Subtracting equation (1) from (2),

(a + b + c + d + e) - ( a + c + e) = b + d

⇒ 140 - 72

= 68

Mean = \frac{b + d}{2}

          = \frac{68}{2}

          = 34

∴ Mean of b and d = 34

Hope this helps you! ♡
