Step-by-step explanation:

Original mean = Sum of observations/5

10=Sum of observations/5

Sum of observations= 50

New mean=New Sum of observations/4

8=New sum of observations/4

New sum of observations=32

The excluded no. = Original sum of observations-New sum of observations=50-32

Excluded no. = 18

Given :- The mean of five numbers is 10. If one number is excluded, their mean becomes 8. What is the excluded number ?

Solution :-

we know that,

  • Mean = (sum of observations)/(Total number of observations)

so,

→ Mean = (sum of observations)/5

→ 10 * 5 = sum of observations

→ sum of observations = 50 .

now, given that, 1 number is excluded .

then,

→ Total numbers = 5 - 1 = 4

→ Mean = 8

therefore,

→ sum of observations = Mean * Total numbers = 8 * 4 = 32 .

hence,

→ Excluded Number = sum of 5 numbers - sum of 4 numbers = 50 - 32 = 18 (Ans.)

The Excluded Number is 18.
