the mean proportional, or geometric mean, is always written in the following format: 

a/x = x/r, where a and r are two different numbers. 
so the mean proportion of 4 and 36 is 
4/x = x/36. just cross multiply and get 144 = x^2, which makes x = 12. 12 is the mean proportional.
