Let the mean proportion of 18 and 72 = x

So 18:x = x:72

 \frac{18}{x}  =  \frac{x}{72}  \\  \\ by \: cross \: multiplication \\  \\ 18 \times 72 = x \times x \\  \\  {x}^{2}  = 18 \times 72 \\  \\ x =  \sqrt{18 \times 72}  =  \sqrt{18 \times 18 \times 2 \times 2}  \\  \\ x = 18 \times 2 \\  \\ x = 36
mean proportion is 36.

Let , the mean proportional of 18 and 72 be x.

Now, 18:x::x:72

18 / x =x / 72

by cross multiplication

{x}^2 =18×72
x = \sqrt{1368}
x = 36
