Horticulture : The Branch of agriculture that deals with the intensive production of vegetables , fruits , medicinal and ornamental plants on a coeecial scale is called horticulture. The term 'Horticulture' is derived from two words Hortus (which mean field) and Cultura (which mean to cultivate) . Horticulture is a multibillion industry in terms of the money it fetches to it's growers.
Some horticultural crops grown in India :
⧠ Fruits : Mango , Grapes , banana , guava , pineapple , cashew and so on.
⧠ Vegetables : Potato , tomato , brinjal , spinach , ladies finger , radish , mushroom , beetroot and so on.
⧠ Flowers : Rose , Marigold , balsam , gladiolus , chrysanthemum and so on.
Horticulture (Hortus- garden, culture- cultivation) is the agriculture of plants, mainly for food, materials, comfort and beauty for decoration. Horticulturists apply knowledge, skills, and technologies to grow intensively produced plants for human food and non-food uses and for personal or social needs.
Horticulture enriches diets: Horticulture — specifically, growing fruits and vegetables — provides critical nutrients for a balanced diet. Diets low in fruits and vegetables contribute significantly to some of the world's most widespread and debilitating nutrient-related disorders
Horticulture is divided into the cultivation of plants for food (pomology and olericulture) and plants for ornament (floriculture and landscape horticulture). Pomology deals with fruit and nut crops.
Color, texture, size, and flavor continue to be the predominant quality characteristics important for successful international marketing of horticultural crops. Product nutraceutical value is also a quality characteristic playing a significantly more important role among consumers in making purchasing decisions.
