The activity of ions across a “semi-permeable membrane” down an electrochemical gradient is known as chemiosmosis. The synthesis of ATP in ‘mitochondria and chloroplast’ is based on the movement of ‘hydrogen ions’ across their gradient developed by the ‘electron transport chain’.  

The potential energy of the gradient and the ionic charge is convert ‘ADP into ATP’. This theory was proposed by ‘Peter Dennis Mitchell’ who won the “Nobel Prize” for this discovery in 1978.
