 THE GIVEN DATA = 

7 ,3 , 40 , 12 , 14.

FIRST WE HAVE TO ARRANGE THE GIVEN DATA ASCENDING ORDER.

= 3 , 7 , 12 , 14 , 40.

 NEXT, THE MIDDLE VALUE = 12.

SO THE 12 IS THE MEDIAN IN THE GIVEN DATA

method: first write the above data in increasing or decreasing order i am writing in increasing order:
 3<7<12<14<40

now find the middle number 

median=12
