SOLUTION

TO DETERMINE

  • The median of data given (in ascending order)2,4,X-3,x+2,11,15 is 7.5.Find x.

  • Hence find the mean of the given data.

EVALUATION

1) Here the given observations are 2,4,x-3,x+2,11,15 which are in ascending order

Total number of observations = 6

Median

 \displaystyle \sf{ =  \frac{x - 3 + x + 2}{2} }

 \displaystyle \sf{ =  \frac{2x - 1}{2} }

So by the given condition

 \displaystyle \sf{   \frac{2x - 1}{2}  = 7.5}

 \displaystyle \sf{ \implies   2x - 1 = 15}

 \displaystyle \sf{ \implies   2x  = 16}

 \displaystyle \sf{ \implies  x  = 8}

Hence the required value of x = 8

2) Here sum of observations

= 2 + 4 + x-3 + x+2 + 11 + 15

= 2x + 31

= 16 + 31

= 47

Hence the required mean

= 47 / 6

= 7.83
