Question:-

40 \:  \: 38  \:  \: 36  \:  \:  31  \:  \:  28   \: \:  26  \:  \: p + 4 \: \:   \: p + 2 \:  \: 18  \:  \: 10  \:  \:  8  \:  \:  7  \:  \:  4  \:  \:  3

The median of following observations is?

Solution:-

There are even number of observations

The median is

 \frac{n}{2}  \:  \: and \:  \:  \frac{n}{2}  + 1

n = 14

 \frac{n}{2}  =  \frac{14}{2}  = 7

 \frac{n}{2}  + 1 =  \frac{14}{2}  + 1 = 7 + 1 = 8

So, the observations are p+4 and p+2

Median of p+4 and p+2 is

 \frac{(p + 4) + (p + 2)}{2}

 =  \frac{2p + 6}{2}

 \frac{2(p + 3)}{2}

 = p + 3

The median is p + 3
