Antonio is a kind-hearted man who lends money to needy people without charging any interest from them. In this respect he offers a striking contrast to Shylock who is a usurer. (A usurer is a money lender who charges excessive rates of interest on the loans which he gives).

Antonio is introduced in this scene as a rich merchant having many shipping ventures at sea he is quite confident about his Fortuner and their success he is President and there's no danger to his fortune as he says my ventures are not in one bottom trusted not one place 9 is my halt state upon the fortune of his present year there for my Merchandise makes me not sad and told use opening sentence in suit I know not why I am so sad he was the dominant melancholy of his character
