Given:

Coefficient of linear expansion (α)= 2 X 10^{-5} C^{-1}

Time period of pendulum at 15°C= 2s

To Find:

Loss or gain of time in 10 hours at 25°C

Solution:

As temperature increases, the length of pendulum clock increases.

Since time period of pendulum is ∝√L,

Time period of pendulum increases as temp increases

Thus, the clock slows down and it loses time

Time lost = \frac{1}{2}αTΔ∅

(T=time during which loss has to be calculated = 10x3600s

Δ∅= difference in temperature (Ф2-Ф1)= 25-15=10)

Time lost = 3.6s

Hence, the time lost by the pendulum is 3.6seconds.
