All the oxides ore can be reduced by Carbon if temperature is sufficiently high because carbon act as good reducing agent at high temperature.Carbon reduction is done for many metallic oxides like ZnO PbO SnO2 etc but in case of Al2O3 Carbon reduction is not done because it will require very high temp as Al2O3 is very stable oxide and lie below in Ellingham diagram and at that temperatures carbides like Al4C3 also forms that decreases the mechanical properties and quality of reduced metal.
