QUESTION :-

The metal rim of a wooden wheel is made smaller in size . Why ?

Answer :-

We know that when an object is heated , it generally expands.

When an object is cooled it contracts .

➡The metal rim of the wooden wheel is made smaller in size than the wooden wheel.

➡Then it is heated to high temperatures and as a result it expands.

➡Now when this expanded rim is cooled to a low temperature it will obviously contract.

➡The metal rim when hot is fitted over the wooden wheel and then cooled to a low temperature.

Thus when the metal rim contracts on cooling , the wooden wheel fits tightly to the rim .

➡Hence the metal rim is made smaller in size.

Hope it helps !
