The chapter ‘The Midnight Visitor’ teaches us many values such as: sincerity in work, devotion to duty, and presence of mind. Ausable is a secret agent who has all the above mentioned qualities. His physical appearance and joviality deceive everyone. It is hard for a new person to find out he is an accomplished secret agent.
His greatest quality is his calmness and composure. When Max tries to elicit some secret information out of Ausable, the latter handles it calmly; he makes such a clever plan of the ordinary happenings that Max gets trapped in them. He makes Max believe that knocking on the door is by the police; he also makes him believe that the window opens to a safe balcony where Max could hide. As Max tries to go into the balcony, Max falls to the ground as there was no balcony.
