Different lands have different criteria for irrigation and drainage purpose. For example flatlands, in basin irrigation a land with a slope of  0.1% or less is suitable.a little effort will be required to maintain the level of the land.  

Similarly, furrow irrigation is considered to be suitable for flat land and for a land having minimum slopes. If a land is steeper than a slope of 0.5% is required for water irrigation. Land with 3% slopes, contour furrows are used to maintain the level of the land. In this land, the minimum slope required to assist drainage is 0.05%.

Border irrigation is recommended for a sloping land up to 2%  on sandy soil and 5% on clay soil. A minimum slope of 0.05% is recommended to ensure adequate drainage.
