The modulus of rigidity of a material is 0.8 x 105 N/mm2. When a 6mm x 6mm rod of this material is subjected to an axial pull of 3600 N, it was found that the lateral dimension of the rod changed to 5.9991 mm x 5.9991 mm. Find the poisson’s ration and modulus of elasticity.

5. The subject strength of materials deals with the relations between externally applied loads and their internal effects on bodies. The bodies are no longer assumed to be rigid and the deformations, however small, are of major interest Alternatively the subject may be called the mechanics of solids. CHAPTER – I Introduction The subject, strength of materials or mechanics of materials involves analytical methods for determining the strength , stiffness (deformation characteristics), and stability of various load carrying members.
