Food grains which are to be stored for future use should be completely dried because of the following reasons.

a) Presence of moisture may be favorable for the growth of microorganisms.

b) Presence of moisture and favorable temperature enhance germination of stored seeds. This should be controlled by removing the moisture completely.

If freshly harvested grains are stored without drying they may spoil or get attacked by microorganisms, losing their germination capacity. Hence, before storing them the grains are properly dried in the sun to reduce moisture in them. This prevents the attack by insects, pests, bacteria, and fungi.
