The molecular formula of 2 carbon compounds are C4H8 and C3H8. Which one of the two is most likely to show addition reaction? Justify your answer. Also give the chemical equation to explain the process of addition reaction in this case

First compound = C4H8  (This is a alkene substance as it is in the form of CnH2n)

Second compound = C3H8 (This is alkane as it is in the form of CnH2n+2)

First compound is unsaturated hydrocarbon called butene and the second compound is saturated hydrocarbon called propane.

Unsaturated compounds undergo addition reaction in multiple bonds and change from alkene to alkane.

Example:

C4H8 + H2  ->  CH3-CH2-CH2-CH3  (That is C4H10, butane)

H2 is addition breaks the double bond and make a single bond.
