- The molecular formulae of three compounds A,B,C are C12H22COOH, C15H31COOH and
C17H33COOH respectively.
a) Out of these which are derived from alkanes? Give reason for the answers
b) Out of these which will becomerancid quickly and why?

a) C₁₇H₃₃COOH is a alkane because it has only single bonds with all carbon.

b) C₁₂H₂₂COOH and C₁₅H₃₁COOH will become rancid quickly because they are unsaturated compounds.

c)We can increase the shelf life by freezing it, sealing it.

a). Compound B that is C15H31COOH is derived by an Alkane because all hydrogen in this compound is singly bounded .

  • In general the number of hydrogen is two times to the number of carbons in a carboxylic acid derived from an Alkane .

b). Compound A and C will become rancid quickly because they are unsaturated in nature.

c). The shelf life can be increases by proper storage of them .
