Question: The moment of intertia of a fly wheel making 300 revolutions per minute is 0.3 kgm2.Find torque required to bring it to rest in 20sec.

Solution :

Given,

moment of inertia = 0.3 kgm^2

Angular velocity = 300 Rev/min

= 300 * 2π/ 60 rad/s

= 10 π rad/s

Using formula =

w \:   =  wo \:  + at

= > 0 = 10π +a *20

Here, final velocity is taken 0 because body becomes rest after 20 sec.

Angular acceleration = -π/2 rad/s

As we know, Torque = moment of inertia * angular acceleration

Therefore, torque = 0.3 * - π/2

= -0.15πNm

Hence, magnitude of torque is 0.15πNm.
